The Alchemical Heritage of Deg-Bhapka Copper Distillation in Kannauj
Tucked along the sacred banks of the Ganges, the historic town of Kannauj has practiced perfume distillation uninterrupted for over four hundred years. Long before modern industrial fractionators and synthetic aldehydes, Kannauji distillers perfected the Deg-Bhapka technique.
The Deg and the Bhapka
A massive copper still known as the Deg is hand-hammered from pure raw copper. Inside, flower petals, baked clay tiles, or wild vetiver roots are submerged in clean water and sealed airtight with wet river mud and cotton rope. Beneath the Deg, a slow wood-and-dung fire is carefully stoked by eye and touch alone—no thermometers are ever used.
As steam rises, it travels through a bent bamboo pipe (the Chonga) directly into a receiver flacon submerged in cold running water—the Bhapka. Inside the Bhapka sits pure, unadulterated Mysore sandalwood oil, which absorbs each delicate fragrant molecule drop by drop.
The Soul of Indian Fragrance
At Centify, this heritage is not a nostalgic memory; it is our living standard. Every bottle of our Pure Attar and Fine Extrait carries the soul of Kannauj's copper stills, honoring the generational artisans whose hands preserve the world's oldest perfumery lineage.
